Code Ninjas League City 2023 Summer Camps

INTRO TO ROBLOX DEVELOPMENT

In this hands-on, fully guided experience, Ninjas will learn the basics of game building and creative development in Roblox, an exciting, online gaming platform. Ninjas will spend their time building and exploring new worlds in Roblox before sharing their creations locally and globally. This camp will teach Ninjas how to plan, design, and build their own 3D world to create much more than just a game!

ADVENTURES IN GAME DESIGN

Ninjas will explore different programming concepts as they create various games inspired by Breakout, Snake, Flappy Bird, and more using a block-based programming language called Scratch—a kid-friendly, visual programming environment developed by MIT. Our team will introduce basic game design and programming concepts like loops, functions, and even video detection to create their own games.

3D DESIGN AND PRINT

Ninjas will explore 3D modeling and printing using Tinkercad. They will code their own custom models, including working bubble wands, keychains, and more! Along the way, they will learn tips, techniques, and best practices for exciting explorations in 3D modeling and printing.

BECOME A YOUTUBER

Ninjas will work together to create and customize a shared YouTube channel, including the design of unique channel art, profile pictures, and video thumbnails. They will also be guided through how to record, edit, and upload videos. Throughout camp, Ninjas will analyze popular YouTube videos and learn about copyrights and fair use to give them what it takes to become a YouTuber!

CODE YOUR OWN ARCADE

Ninjas will create retro-style arcade games with Microsoft MakeCode Arcade. Throughout the camp, Ninjas combine the power of coding with game design to enhance their programming skills and develop games inspired by classic platformers, adventure games, and more! At the end of the camp, they will bring their games to life on handheld gaming devices to play and share with friends.

CODE YOUR OWN CARTOONS

Ninjas will learn how to express themselves and let their creativity shine through code as they work together to craft silly, scary, and exciting cartoons in Scratch—a kid friendly, visual programming environment developed by MIT. Throughout this experience, Ninjas will level-up their knowledge of basic coding concepts as well as their storytelling abilities.

MODDING WITH MINECRAFT®

Developed for experienced Minecraft® players, this camp teaches Ninjas how to make unique mods (modifications that change the game)! They will create their own custom tools, weapons, armor, enemies, and more! By the end of the camp, Ninjas will be able to export their mods for friends and family to explore at home using Minecraft® Java Edition.

INTRO TO WEB DEVELOPMENT

Ninjas will learn about creative website development by building their own website and fan page. As Ninjas work on various project prompts, they will gain a foundational understanding of HTML and CSS. Using these essential computing languages, Ninjas will publish websites and share links to showcase what they've learned.

ROBOTICS WITH LEGO®

Throughout this camp, Ninjas will make silly dancing robots, a working safe with password detection, a racing rhino, and more! Using the LEGO® SPIKE™ Prime robotics kit, Ninjas will learn the fundamentals of how to design, build, and code robots. They will also apply their new knowledge of sensors, motors, and coding as they construct their own creations.

CODE YOUR OWN ROBOT IN MINECRAFT®

Ninjas will use code to control a robot in Minecraft Education Edition®. Through simple programming, they'll apply complex computer science concepts to automate the boring parts of Minecraft® such as farming, digging and more. Ninjas will use concepts like loops and functions to code crazy things like spawning hundreds of chickens from the sky! They will have a blast sharing their work and playing in a world together with their fellow campers.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION

Ninjas will experiment with video production through a variety of mediums including Claymation, LEGO® Minifigures, paper cutouts, and more! Capturing images frame-by-frame, they will produce videos in a rapid prototyping style. Ninjas will work on various shorts including magic trick illusions, a 3-part story, walking character animations, and more! They will work independently on their videos and collaborate in teams during the entire design process.

CREATE AND COMPETE

Let’s create and compete in a tech-lovers' field day! Makey Makey extends beyond the screen and brings engineering and coding concepts to life in exciting new ways. In this camp, we will bring classic field day activities to the next level with coded circuit board creations. Using the Makey Makey, ninjas will learn how to build & code game tools including stopwatches, scoreboards, and more out of simple household materials like cardboard and foil. Ninjas will then create and compete in a series of fun, movement-based challenges with each other using their own inventions!

NEXT LEVEL ROBLOX DEVELOPMENT

Experienced Roblox game builders will take their skills to the next level in this camp as they learn coding fundamentals and dig deeper into the game-making side of Roblox. Using the Lua programming language Ninjas will create their own timed, sudden-death Roblox game along with an interactive obstacle course. By the end of camp, ninjas will showcase their game, play their peers’ games, and publish their creation to the Roblox world. (Intro to Roblox Development camp or similar Roblox experience required.)

INVENTORS WITH MAKEY MAKEY

Using a Makey Makey circuit board and maker materials, Ninjas will design and build music interfaces, game controllers, and more! This camp combines the power of coding, electronics, and hardware to create a collection of unique interactive games and projects. They will work together to create, reflect, and share their work as they invent new ways to interact with computers.

JR INVENTORS WITH MAKEY MAKEY

Created for our youngest Ninjas, in this camp kids will use a Makey Makey circuit board and household materials, to learn about electronics, game controllers, and how hardware and software interact. Imagine vegetable bongo drums, gummy bear pianos…these are just a few of the fun projects they will build in this camp. Ninjas will work together to create, reflect, and share their work as they invent new ways to interact with computers!

JR STEM DISCOVERIES

Created for our youngest Ninjas, this camp is all about becoming a maker with STEM while designing and building hands-on projects! Electric playdough, marble machines, and tall towers are just a few of the fun projects kids will tackle as they develop their engineering and design skills.

MAKERS WITH MICROCONTROLLERS

Ninjas will explore the exciting world of physical computing with a microcontroller called micro:bit. This tiny computer makes it possible for Ninjas to design a variety of interactive projects, such as a wearable pedometer, digital pet, a multiplayer game, and more. They will learn how to harness the power of code, sensors, sound and more. Throughout the week, Ninjas become makers, coders, and game designers while learning from the process of iteration, reflection, and feedback.

OPERATION: CODE BREAKERS

Join us as we explore cryptology, practice creating and solving coded information, and create your very own escape room! Ninjas will learn different puzzle-creating techniques used throughout history and apply them to create secret messages. They will also learn to harness the power of computer programming using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade and micro:bit to write encryption and decryption programs that we will use to build an escape room mega-puzzle to play and share with fellow campers and friends.

LEGO PYTHON ENGINEERS

Boost coding skills while learning and playing with friends in this crash course on the Python programming language – no previous coding experience required! Ninjas will follow along with the “Code this Game!” book to build a strategy action game from the ground up in Python. As they practice game design concepts like spawning and enemy AI, they will begin to see how computer code is behind all the games and programs we use daily. Code Senseis will then guide Ninjas as they modify the game to create their own unique versions.

MOVIEMAKING WITH MINECRAFT

Ninjas will shift their imagination into high gear as they learn scene building, storytelling, and video recording featuring their own Minecraft® world. They will also jump into the basics of editing and mixing audio as they produce their final stories as short movies. Using Minecraft® as a creative medium, Ninjas will have fun expressing themselves and sharing their stories with friends. They will leave this camp with a deeper understanding of how creativity and technology can work together to tell exciting stories.
